Heal from within, one “part” at a time

The healing process can be an exhausting one. For so many of us in supportive or “helping” roles, we’re simultaneously doing the work of nurturing others while also managing our own complex—and often conflicted—inner lives.

After a while, it becomes tiring to be at odds with yourself, caught in a daily battle that generates anxiety, overwhelm, dysregulation, and a feeling of being stuck in patterns that never seem to change. Surely, you’ve done your best to cope, probably devoting ample time to your own therapy, but a part of you is worn down and unable to give more. One part of you probably is desperate for rest while the other pushes harder, making you wonder why you always feel so much disagreement inside.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is therapy for people who are tired of battling themselves. If you’re ready to try a different way of being in relationship with yourself—a relationship rooted in curiosity, compassion, and connection to your inner wisdom—then you’ve come to the right place.

Let’s connect

What is IFS?

Internal Family Systems therapy is a gentle, evidence-based counseling approach that helps you understand and heal the inner parts of you that carry pain, fear, and shame. It’s a non-pathologizing, relational, and empowering model that is designed to help you reconnect with your core Self.

In IFS, you learn about the different “parts” of your being—the achiever, the inner critic, the perfectionist, the caretaker (just to name a few examples)—and their role in keeping you safe. This therapy gives you language to structure and map out how to address conflicting parts of yourself. Rather than seeing various parts as flawed or “bad,” IFS teaches you how to respond in ways that nurture self-understanding, compassion, and integration.

Healing happens from the inside out through this work, allowing you to reconnect with yourself, others, and the world around you with more calm, clarity, and inner wisdom.

IFS Therapy is one of the primary approaches used at Rebecca White Counseling

A lot of therapists out there incorporate “parts work” into their practice or describe themselves as “IFS-informed,” but it’s important to work with a trained IFS clinician since poor treatment outcomes can occur when this therapy is not properly integrated. That’s particularly important to keep in mind if you’ve tried IFS in the past but didn’t get the results you wanted—or even had a bad experience with the therapist.

Since 2023, I have been learning and training extensively in Internal Family Systems; I have completed both Level 1 and Level 2 training at the IFS Institute and am currently finishing the requirements to become IFS Certified. I also spend time volunteering as an assistant for IFS Institute trainings.

In both my personal and professional experience with IFS therapy, I’ve noticed just how much more quickly progress happens when compared to other models. I love the ways in which this work nurtures curiosity about the Self and how much it relies on the inner wisdom we all possess as a vehicle for lasting change. When combined with somatic models, IFS promotes healing at the very deepest level.

IFS fosters self-leadership, helping you move forward

Through IFS, you develop a different, broader, and more compassionate self-understanding. Instead of getting swept up in automatic reactions and emotions, you can learn how to pause, notice what’s happening, and respond with intention. Over time, you will likely observe the healing of early traumas and past wounds, allowing you to relate to yourself and the world around you with greater calm and less criticism.

Using my combination of somatic therapy and IFS, you have a chance to change how you make decisions—from a place of authentic, embodied, and connected awareness instead of a place of compulsion, habit, and fear.
